My (religious) beliefs, in a nutshell

Either Enlighten me or Leave Me Alone

These lyrics have been running through my head a lot lately. The song is on my "Canciones del año 24" mix which will be complete in July. I think about it whenever I realize that I'm trying to talk to someone who doesn't have anything to say (anything to teach me). I want to talk to people who engage my thoughts and beliefs; I have no time for people who are not adding to my knowledge or understanding. So these lyrics, to me, echo the song "Psychokiller" by the Talking Heads, especially their line, "You start a conversation--you can't even finish it. You're talking a lot, but you're not saying anything. When I have nothing to say, my lips are sealed. Say something once, why say it again?" Those are my sentiments in a nutshell. Smashing Patriarchy, One Woman at a Time

The Christians and the Pagans

My sister and I had many a lovely conversation last week as we drove through the switchbacks of eastern Tennessee on the way to and back from visiting my mommy in South Carolina. Sofia slept peacefully in her little carseat, deaf to the peals of laughter and conversational noises emitting from the front seat. One of the many tangents we diverged upon was the etymology of the word "pagan." We couldn't remember it, although both of us had recently come across it. Irene, sharp and diligent intellectual that she is, remembered to email the etymology to me yesterday, a few days after our arrival home. I added to it by searching in the Oxford English Dictionary for an extended etymology. It was extremely curious. Perhaps a few more people might put themselves in the pagan camp after reading the history of the term and its duality to the term "Christian." So here it is, for all those burning to know:

PAGAN. n. adj. "from Latin 'paganus', originally "villager, rustic; civilian, non-militant", opposed to 'miles' "soldier, one of the army". In Christian Latin (Tertullian, Augustine), "heathen" as opposed to Christian or Jewish. The Christians called themselves 'milites': "enrolled soldiers" of Christ (members of this militant church) and applied to non-Christians the term applied by soldiers to all who were 'not enrolled in the army.' from Tertullian 'De Corona Militis' xi' "Apud hune [Cristum] tam miles est paganus fidelis quam paganus est miles infidelis."

So now we are all inspired to go home and read Tertullian in full in the original Latin. Go on, scatter, all you little pagans!!!

These are my favourite quotes from the novel, a novel which is arguably finer than 1984, and one which I recommend to everyone. When you read them, see if any of the quotes remind you of another certain conflict in which the U.S. (everyone's favourite empire) is currently embroiled....

The Gallery of Regrettable Food




This VERY disgusting picture came from a VERY awesome website called "The Gallery of Regrettable Food." You can find it at: http://www.lileks.com/institute/gallery/index.html . It ROCKS! My friend who works in Reference at the UofL's Ekstrom library--we'll call her KB--pointed the site out to me after I went to show her my excellent "Housewives Tarot" deck. Thomas gifted these to me, knowing full well how perfect they were for me when he saw them at Barnes & Noble. I can't decide which is my favourite card: it's either the Hierophant, Death, Judgment or the High Priestess. I'll post pictures later. Anyhoo, KB told me about the Gallery of Regrettable Food, which I highly recommend you all check out. It is hiLARious, chock full of pages from old cookbooks and food ads from the 1930s, 40s, 50s, 60s and even 70s. There are some especially ugly recipes involving gelatin products. Ewwww. Opaque jell-o: who thought that was a good idea? Anyway, all the bad food ideas and crimes of the last century are dutifully recounted and made fun of on this excellent and funny website.
